In art, an armature is an underlying, unseen, supporting component. In a sculpture this may be a wire framework. In painting this is commonly a geometric layout.

There are indications that some of HR Giger’s work may have been based upon an ordering principle – the harmonic rectangle. Perhas the ‘spontaneous’ artist may have been using a very old principle to ‘guide’ the spontaneity toward harmonic proportions.
